Travel tips for a motorcycle holiday abroad
If you are planning a motorcycle trip abroad take a look
at the following useful travel tips
The travel tips below will hopefully remind you to prepare
successfully for your holiday!
Maintenance
Have your motorcycle checked and serviced well before your
departure date to ensure that it is fine to travel abroad.
It may be wise to carry a small toolset for running repairs.
Check the amount of time left on your MOT and Tax, so it
is valid while on holiday, as out of date documents could
invalidate your insurance.
Motorcycle
Insurance – Check with your insurance provider
to ensure you are fully insured for travel within the EU.
Find out beforehand what to do if you have an accident or
your bike is stolen during your trip. Also find out the
time your policy covers you to be in any particular country
within the territorial limits of
the EU.
Passport – Make sure you always carry your passport
on your person. This is not only useful to get back into
the country but also required to register at foreign accommodation
and useful to have if you are crossing a frontiers in your
trip.
Maps
Driving Licence – Make sure you keep your UK driving
licence with you at all times.
Vehicle Registration Document – All EU countries
require you keep the original V5 document about your person
as proof that the vehicle is registered to you.

Travel Insurance – Make sure you are covered
to travel abroad. It can be helpful to complete an E111
health form as a back up to your existing travel insurance
policy.
Form E111 – This form is available at most Post offices
and is useful to have if you are taken ill abroad and need
treatment. Always best to take a couple of photocopies with
you as if you are treated for illness a copy will be retained
and you may need treatment again.

Check with your current breakdown cover provider or insurer
that you are definitely covered to travel abroad and exactly
what the policy covers as regardfs foreign travel.
GB/EU Sticker – Your motorcycle must display a GB
Sticker when abroad. Today number plates usually have an
EU marking on and are accepted in all EU countries instead
of a GB sticker.
Mobile Phone – If you plan to take your
mobile phone with you check with your mobile phone provider
to make sure phone calls can be made 'roaming' and received
abroad if necessary. Always ask what the charges will be
for the country you intend to travel in.
.Always carry spare light bulbs
Continental Adapter – always handy to keep
with you to charge your mobile phone or other electrical
items you may carry with you on your journey.
Bike Tie Downs – Always useful for the ferry crossing
to ensure your motorcycle is secure and not going to move.
