Moped
Insurance:
This term is legally defined in order
to distinguish a less powerful form of machine from Motorcycles
more generally.
The Road Traffic Act sets the minimum age for riding mopeds
and Motorcycles at 16 and 17 years respectively.
For machines first registered on or before 31st July 1977,
a moped is a machine (i.e. Motorcycle) with an engine capacity
not exceeding 50 c.c. and which is equipped with pedals
s a means of propulsion.
If registered after 1st August 1977 it is a machine which
has a maximum design speed not exceeding 30 m.p.h., a kerb
weight not exceeding 250 kg and an engine with no more than
50c.c.
