Motorcycle Insurance Certificates:

The certificate is proof that the use of a vehicle is insured in accordance with the Road Traffic Act 1988 (qv) and is issued by the motorcycle insurer in the form specified by the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Risks) Regulations 1972. Section 147 (1) provides that a certificate must be delivered to the person or body effecting the insurance otherwise, for the purpose of the Act, the motorcycle insurance is not effective.

The insured can authorise an agent to receive the certificate on his behalf. When an insurance is cancelled the certificate must be surrendered to the Car Insurer within seven days of the cancellation date. Where the motorcycle insurance certificate has been lost or destroyed a statutory declaration must be made to that effect.

You will need to show your motorcycle insurance certificate to purchase road tax at a post office.
